These kinds of bars used to be the bane of GIs paychecks. Often some guy would reenlist for 6 years in the days when that netted about $600.00 US dollars, and go to a place like this and spend it all on drinks for himself, the sudden influx of pretty hostesses who drank water distilled beer, and the owner himself. When the guy finally staggered back into the barracks, drunk, he would remember what he did and either cry or become violent and start trying to kill everyone with a baseball bat or a knife. I have seen it happen more than once. They usually got out on a Section 8 (mental) discharge after spending some time playing crazy at the Sendai Army Hospital.
