The Monster
I'll have to revisit this picture, but this thing can be seen from almost anywhere in Sendai. That's a 9-story hotel to the right of it.
I've asked around and pieced together a story of the monster. There was a Buddhist sect that decided to settle on the top of Nakayama Mountain. They built the statue and the buildings; they then went bankrupt and left. The land was turned into a golf course (still in use) and the building was turned into a hotel/convention center (not in use). The statue is considered a nuisance by the residents, but the cost of taking it down is too much. This is where zoning laws are nice.
If you know anything about this, I'd love to hear more.

The statue looks huge. Too bad the residents think it's a nuisense. They could probably turn it into a tourist attraction.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how tall it is?
Nice pictures on your blog.
this statue is incredible!
ReplyDeleteThat must be a weird thing to see everyday. Though I agree that it can be turned into a tourist attraction. It's pretty awesome too.
