Alone

Sendai Tsunami

Alone is what I thought of when I came here. This hill used to have a shrine on it. When I first came here I had wondered if it was a safe haven during the tsunami. It was pretty tall. but as I came around, I saw that the hand rails on the stairs were ripped out and the entire shrine was gone from the top.

Broken Trees

broken-trees

See how the tree is broken in half? Don't stand under evergreen trees in an earthquake. In Iwate I saw a forest were a quarter of the cedar trees were broken in half.

Tsunami Wake

The amount of trash and debris spread around in this area was amazing. And this was jsut one little speck of the damage.

Harbor Fire

sendai-harbor-on-fire-2

I'm pretty sure that this is the oil refinery on fire the day after the earthquake, March 12. This will be the end of my earthquake pictures on here. Really, nothing much happened around here. If you are looking for more, look here.

Water Line

sendai-earthquake-water-line-2

Water was scarce, but in one neighborhood near my apartment, it was running. I stood in the line to the left (where there are only a few people) then gave up when it started trickling out. This was three days after the earthquake on Monday morning.

I Was Here

sendai-earthquake-gas-line

This is March 12 near my apartment. All these people were waiting for gas, and a few days later, I did too - for eight hours.

These ladies were volunteering at the evacuation center on March 12.

Evacuation Center

sendai-earthquake-evacuation-center-3

The junior high near my house was used as an evacuation center. People around here were staying there, but I think it was only because there was a lack of water and heat; not to mention rice.

Kyugyo

I see this sign a lot. Kyugyo is the term for a temporary break in operation. I see this a lot around town and especially at gas stations.

I too will take a break from this until I am able to reconnect with my camera.

Sanriku Coast

Misty Mountain Color

This is a photo blog about Sendai, but this picture is not from Sendai. This picture is from a beach near the town of Miyako - a town that was hit hard by the tsunami. Taken in 2009.

In Memory

This blog is on autopilot, and all the pictures were taken before the earthquake. Today marks one week since the disaster and I thought this picture would be fitting for it.
